Musketeer with sword, 1972,
Oil, canvas, Museum Ludwig, Cologne
In the 16th century and subsequently the Musketeers were with a musket, a muzzle-loader armed foot soldiers on the front line with an important military strategic task. As fictional characters, the musketeers with sword or epee were considered selfless, righteous journeymen who defended and helped the little man in the fight against the evil and the machinations of the authorities. The depiction of the head shows the typical elements of Pablo Picasso, the head and hat have a sculptural and three-dimensional effect, while as a counterpart the crest or rank on the Musketeer's epaulette is an insignificant, two-dimensional line drawing.
