Harlequin with folded Hands, 1923,
Oil, canvas, Museum Ludwig, Cologne

The harlequin is a fool in the Italian theatre of the 16th century. In the presentation with folded hands, he takes a youthful, innocent-looking pose; the facial expression is more a mask. A characteristic garment of the harlequin is his patched costume. As the game progresses, the Harlequin often takes on different roles. Changed patch check on his costume are an indication of the transformations in his depicted roles.
